Team Manager's Requests: Team managers Debbie Bull and Julie Regan are hoping for another good match at Leamington on 23rd May and to go one better than their 2nd place finish last time out. In a difficult time with exams looming large it is not the best timing for a match but we are hopeful of a good team on the day. As long as we finish no lower than 2nd in the league by the end of the season, we will be sure of a place in the Promotion match to contest a place back in the Premiership next year. There is a great team spirit amongst the youngsters and this can only work to their advantage.

Match Report

Cardiff were clear winners in the second round of the National Junior League, held at Leamington Spa yesterday, Sunday 23 May.

Boys' captain Tom Knight won both the 100m and the 200m while girls' captain Ayla Phillips competed in four events.

The team performed exceptionally well in very hot and sticky conditions and it was a day of 'firsts' all around with many athletes making their first appearances in this League.

The team finished first overall, a win that the athletes richly deserved, for their spirit and determination. This now puts us in joint first place in the Division with Plymouth & Cornwall AC.

The match result was: 1. Cardiff (443);  2. Plymouth & Cornwall (404);  3. Solihull & Small Heath (347);  4. South East Wales (329);  5. Avon Spa  (211);  6. Bristol & West (153);  7. Coventry Godiva (137).

Sam Conway was finally rewarded for his fine efforts in the 400m, breaking the 50 second barrier for the first time, clocking 49.6s. Gareth Winter shone in all four throws, helped by Jacob Matthews, Bradley Cole and Kyle Garrison, most of whom managed a PB along the way. Jacob Brennan put up a brave display in the 400mH and should not be too disappointed with his time of 61.1s, all things considered, before tackling the 800m in a show of team spirit. Kostas Karras ran very well in the 400m. Michael Ward (800m &1500m) Sam Gordon (100m) Oliver Jeffries (110mH) and James McGuire (LJ & TJ) all gave good accounts of themselves on their debuts in this League.

Not to be outdone by the boys, debutante Cyndi Kitenge ran well for the girls, earning a PB of 12.9 in the 100m. Dani Mill looks a promising prospect at the 400mH, clocking 73.3s on the first attempt at her new event, also collecting a PB in the Triple Jump along the way. Hannah Clarke and Gwen Williams both did well, also covering the 400m in addition to their own events. Bethan Daw equalled her PB in the 1500m, while Elinor Lewis gave her all, contributing many points to the Team score. Lucy Daly, also a first time competitor in this League, reinforced our reputation for quality Pole Vaulters, taking the spoils in the B string.

The next match is at Coventry on 27th June and team managers Debbie and Julie hope to see you all there along with the people who were unable to make it today due to the Senior match at Loughborough and all those who have been studying hard for their exams. Hopefully most of the exams will be over by then and our athletes can return to the team to help in our quest for a spot back in the Premier Division in 2011.

Individual event winners were:

Boys:  Tom Knight (100m A & 200m A);  Sam Conway (400m A);  Gareth Winter (Discus A & Hamme rA & Shot Put B);  Jacob Matthews (Shoy Put A); James McGuire (Triple Jump B).
