Sunday 12 September 2010

On a perfect day in Cardiff's city centre this morning, 12 September, just under 3000 runners set off for the 25th running of the HSBC Cardiff 10k road race.

Cardiff's Michael Johnson (pictured after receiving his winner's medal from Welsh Athletics President John Penny) clinched his second Welsh title in a month, finishing in a personal best time for the 10k distance of 29:50.

Other club runners who distinguished themselves included Richie Gardiner who was the first vet (35 years) home in 30:44 in ninth place.

It was good to see Simon Lawson back running and he was second in the under 23 catergory, finishing 18th in the race in 32:48.

Matthew Collins finished in 14th place, Peter Ryder in 25th and James Raven in 37th.

First Cardiff lady home was Bethan Strange (102nd).

The main race was preceded by a 2k fun run and this was won by Cardiff's Ciaran Lewis.

Not amongst the medals but running for charity was Cardiff's multi medal winning 400m runner Jamie Baulch; who is also planning to run in next year's London Marathon. Ever the crowd pleaser, Jamie finished his 10k with an impressive final sprint to the line.
