Gwent League 2

Friday 13 November 2009

Cardiff followed the success of the first Gwent League in the second fixture held last Sunday at Bath University.

On a cold wet day, and on a tough course that is feared and sometimes avoided, Mike Ward added a second victory in the under 15 boys' race, folowing his win in Bridgend on 11th October.

Particularly impressive was Ava Hutchinson who won the senior ladies' race.

Alex Hains (pictured) was third in the senior men's race.

Ava Hutchinson's win was a particularly impressive feat as she finished ahead of Bristol's Claire Hallisey who was the first Briton home in the World Half Marathon Championships last month. Ava never looked troubled and, with Vicky Barcello finishing 7th, led her team home to second place behind a very impressive Bristol Team. After two races, Cardiff's ladies are holding second place overall in the team placings.

The men's race was also dominated by Bristol, who are always strong in fixtures East of the border. Alex Hains was our first scorer in third place. Alex ran very strongly in still only his second race back following long term injury and was closing on GB International Tom Russell on the last lap. Andrew Hunt was another man returning from injury and said he was pleased with his 15th place, which he will no doubt better next time. Cardiff's senior men's team is lying in third position overall after two rounds.
