Cardiff athletes shine

Thursday 3 September 2009

In weather conditions that were the worst experienced for this event, Cardiff athletes scored heavily for the South Wales team that won the Welsh Inter Regional Championships last Sunday, 30 August, in Swansea.

South Wales won narrowly from West Wales with East Wales third and North Wales fourth.

Probably the best performances of the day came from David Guest who competes for the Cardiff BAL team as a higher competition athlete. David set a new championship record in the Under 20 long jump with 7.21m and also won the high jump with 1.95m both excellent performances in the circumstances.

Ever present Matt Ledger won the senior 110m hurdles, took second in the high jump and fifth in the pole vault; while club captain James Thie contested the 400m and 800m. Veteran Alyson Hourihan won the shot put and discus, was third in hammer (won by Ayla Phillips) and third again in the javelin.

In the under 20 age group, Gareth Hopkins completed a good double, taking the 100m in 11.18sec and the 400m in 49.12sec, a championship record. Alex Obiako won the triple jump.

Athlete of the month in June, Jamaul White won the U17 men's 100m hurdles and came second in the 200m. Jacob Brennan won the 400m hurdles and Ryan Leonard the javelin. For the U17 women, Mica Moore scored a double win in the 100m and 200m with Jamie Leigh Bowen second to Mica in both races. Consistent Sam Cogan set a new championship record, winning the 300m in 40.57sec.

And, in the U15 girls age group, Ffion Bodilly won the high jump with 1.60m and was fourth in the long jump.
