Cardiff team in final?
Monday 11 October 2010
Will an all Cardiff team represent Wales in the final of the men's 4x400m relay tomorrow?
Three Cardiff runners (Rhys Williams, Joe Thomas and Gareth Warburton) plus Swansea's 800m runner Chris Gowell ran brilliantly in the semi final to grab a place in the final.
With Dai Greene opting not to contest the final and the possibility of Christian Malcolm being drafted in, the selectors have to decide whom to leave out.
James Thie has also qualified for tomorrow's final of the 1500m
With Rhys Williams running a very strong first leg, Joe Thomas running the fastest leg and Gareth Warburton a former 400m specialist who has run for Great Britain, it could be Chris Gowell who loses out to Christian.
Christian is an unknown quantity over 400m but, with his basic 200m speed, is capable of a spectacular 400m in a relay.
With the Welsh team qualifying in 3:6.31, the club record of 3:10.90, set in 1973, could at long last be under threat.
James Thie ran a well judged and very controlled race to qualify for the final in fifth place as one of the fastest after the four automatic qualifiers. His time was 3:42.74.
Paul Walker finished fifth in the Pole Vault final with a season's best clearance of 5.25m.
