Cross Country Beckons

Monday 21 September 2009

As another track season comes to an end and the days become shorter and colder, a new cross country season is around the corner. We can look back on the track season with great satisfaction at outstanding individual as well as team performances. This was reflected in a great presentation evening not long ago. This season is over but there is little time for rest.

The winter is the time when the track and field specialists train for next year and when the cross country and road runners take centre stage. Cross country is also an essential part of the winter training for many track, and even some field event, athletes.

For Welsh athletes, the Gwent Cross Country League provides the core of the winter season, leading up to the various championships. Cardiff AAC enters teams in all age groups, from novices up to veterans. You do not have to be a middle distance runner to compete as you might be a jumper, thrower or sprinter. You might even be someone who just likes to get wet and muddy;cross country can be great fun.

The Gwent League dates are:

Sunday, October 11th.   Newbridge Fields in Bridgend.
Sunday, November 8th.  University of Bath.
Sunday, December 6th.  Hestercombe Gardens in Taunton.
Sunday, February 13th.  Penlan Leisure Centre in Brecon.
Saturday, March 6th.     Blaise Castle in Bristol.

The Gwent League has a website http://www.gwent-league.org.uk and, on it can be found race details including course maps, directions, race distances, age groups and results.

There is a minimum age of 9 years on the day of the race and only Cardiff AAC members may compete in the Cardiff vest. There are individual and team prizes awarded at the end of the season and although it is not essential to compete in all five races it obviously helps the team to compete in as many as possible.

For information on entering and competing for Cardiff, contact one of the team managers, come and see them in the club room on a Monday or Thursday evening and keep an eye on the club's website.

Team managers are Kay Chapman (07749 716151), Julie Jones (07702 888374) and Ceri Morris (07817 275633) for boys and girls up to 17, Alex Donald (07740 471573)  and Paul Darney (07967 509040)  for U20 and senior men and John Penny (07816 654741) for senior women.
