Good luck to Rhys
Friday 14 August 2009
Tomorrow evening, Saturday, in Berlin, Rhys Williams will settle into his starting blocks for the first round of the 400m hurdles at the IAAF World Championships.
This will mark the high spot of his first full year of competition since taking the Bronze medal at the European Championships in Gothenburg 1n 2006.
The 400m hurdles, as all world championship events, will be tough with a clutch of top athletes from the USA and elsewhere.
The entry list contains 34 athletes from 23 countries so Wales can be proud to have 2 (Rhys and Swansea's Dave Greene).
There will be only 3 rounds so progression will not be easy. Nevertheless both Rhys and Dave Greene should be good enough to qualify for the second round which is also the semi final. Getting to the final will be a different matter.
Rhys has done remarkably well to be in Berlin after his couple of years of injuries and we wish him every success. He will be cheered on in the stadium by several Cardiff AAC stalwarts, including Graham and Christine Webb, Kay James, Kath Elias, John and Mary Lister,
The actual timings of the rounds are:
First round: Saturday 15th. 20.20
Semi-final: Sunday 16th. 20.15
Final: Tuesday 18th. 20.50
All times are German, which are one hour ahead of Great Britain.
