Good weekend for athletes
Wednesday 27 May 2009
A strong mixture of good results for Cardiff athletes included an excellent performance by our younger athletes in the Welsh Junior League at Aberdare, a new Welsh Triple Jump record for Sara Barry and personal bests for Tom Miller, Tom Knight, Liam Duff, Chris Howe, Joe Maynard and Nathan Felvus in Guernsey.
At the second Welsh Junior League match of the season, on Saturday last 23 May, there were 17 event winners which was an increase of 10 on the first Welsh Junior League match in Newport. Many athletes were competing for the first time and it was the first time that we had any athletes in the under 11 age group. Most of the team set new personal bests and there were several new league records set too. The weather was also much better for the athletes but perhaps a little too hot for the distance athletes. More details can be found on the individual event page. Go to Fixtures & Results > View League Fixtures > Welsh Under 15 League Round 2.
At Bedford, on Sunday 24th May, competing for South Wales in the Inter-Counties championships, Sara Barry set a new Welsh Triple Jump record of 12m 40, beating Sally Peake's old record of 12m 14 by 26cms. Well done Sara.
A group of Cardiff athletes travelled to Guernsey in search of good competition and came away with personal bests galore. In an afternoon with perfect weather for athletics, there was plenty to smile about with Tom Miller winning the 400m race with a new 48.3s PB and Matt Elias and Tom Knight winning race A and B in the 200m (21.58s and 22.21s - new outdoors PB - respectively).
Good, medal-winning performances on the day were ensured also by Glynn Hawkes, 2nd in race C in the 200m (22.64s); Liam Duff and Chris Howe, who both recorded new PBs in the 100m, winning silver and bronze with 10.87s and 10.93s respectively; and Joe Maynard, who improved his best performance in the 400m, clinching third position (48.80s).
Nathan Felvus improved his PB in the same race, setting a time of 49.09s for 4th, while Nik Mesney and Santino Dummett were both 4th in the 200m race A (22.29s) and the 100m (11.09s).
