Gwent League round 3

Thursday 10 December 2009

The third round of this year's Gwent League took place last Sunday, 6th December, at Hestercombe Gardens, Taunton. Cardiff was well represented by its younger runners but was very thin on the ground in the senior categories. Under 15 boys league leader Mike Ward, despite the handicap of using short spikes on a muddy course, came third and retained his overall lead. The best senior performance came from Bethan Strange who finished in 10th place. This also put her 5th in the under 23 category.

Peter Ryder (11th), Andy Friend (13th) and Mike Johnson (14th) kept Cardiff in 4th place in the senior men's league rankings.

The best overall team result was in the under 13 boys category with Tom Edmunds finishing 3rd, John Cove 4th, Ciaran Lewis 7th and Rhys Gooch 13th. They are sure to retain first place in the team lists.

Darren Jones was our only representative in the under 17 boys race, finishing a creditable 16th in a mixed race of under 17s and under 20s.

There was a good turnout of under 13 girls with Kate Seary leading the club runners home in 18th place, closely followed by Stephanie Lowe (19th) and with Megan Tatnell (21st), Carrigan Gristock (56th) and Joanne Rees (60th) completing the lineup. Carrigan Gristock managed to fall flat in the mud but picked herself up to finish the race.

Only two under 15 girls took part. Clare Harwood finished 18th and new member Holly Morris, who had never seen such a course before, finished an excellent 21st. Zoe Thomas had a good run to finish 8th, again in a mixed under 17/under 20 race.

There was a lot of criticism of the course and the organisation of this race and it is doubtful whether another Gwent League will be held in Taunton.

Full results will be posted on the Gwent League website which can be accessed through the links page.
