Mike Johnson third

Monday 7 September 2009

Cardiff's Mike Johnson (0003), running for the Welsh team, took third place in yesterday's Cardiff 10k.

The race was won by Burundi born Jean Ndaysinga with Tom Humphries second, a reversal of their respective positions in last year's race. Both athletes were representing the Midlands area.

There was plenty of Cardiff interest in the race, with perhaps the most impressive performance coming from Tom Marshall (0005) who knocked 72 seconds off his personal best to clock 30:12 and take sixth place.

European 10,000m silver medallist Simon Lawson opted at the last minute to run in Cardiff instead of Bristol and finished 13th in 31:07. Mike Johnson finished narrowly outside the elusive 30 minute barrier.

Other Cardiff runners included Andy Friend, also with a personal best (31:58), Matt Collins (32:03), Pete Ryder (33:32) and Keith Fairbank (35:05).

The men's inter area team race was won by the North of England, led home by Mark Warmby in fourth place. The women's team race was won by South of England whose Kelly Crickmore took first place in the women's race.
