Nail-biter for YAL team

Sunday 18 July 2010

Cardiff's Young Athletes' League team has qualified for the area final in Birmingham on 1st August after an anxious wait for the result of rival Yate's match; which would decide which club would go through.

Decimated by its best athletes being on international duty for Welsh Schools and other absences, the Cardiff team could manage only third place in today's fourth and final match at Yate, Bristol.

Four clubs from each division qualify for the area final and fourth placed Cardiff's prority was to finish above fifth placed Wolverhampton & Bilston.

Although Cardiff finished in third place, behind Wolverhampton in second, and Swansea in first place, the overall result is decided by the accumulated points scored over the four rounds and Cardiff managed, just, to hold off Wolverhampton by 25 points.

Going into the fourth round, Yate was in fifth place and would need to score at least 604 points (a stiff target) to leapfrog over Cardiff into fourth place. In the event, they managed to score 588, just short of the target.

Today's match result was:  1. Swansea (571 points);  2. Wolverhampton & Bilston (539);  3.Cardiff (468).
