Matt Elias has finally decided to hang up his spikes.
The last race of a fine athletic career was for the club's BAL team on 31 July when Matt ran a personal best time in the 110m Hurdles (actually, it was the first time he had tried this event!) of 15.29 - not bad.
Primarily a 400m hurdler, Matt has gathered an enviable collection of medals from the European Championships and Commonwealth Games and narrowly missed an Olympic medal in Athens in 2004.
One of the club's most successful seasons for many years heads for its climax over the next two weekends.
Next Saturday (21st August) the British League team will head for Liverpool in its bid to clinch promotion to the Premiership division at the top of British Club athletics.
The following day (22nd) will see the Welsh Junior League final in Brecon and, one week later, the National Junior league team contests the promotion match in Derby.
All the best athletes need coaching and becoming a coach can be a very rewarding experience.
If you are interested in making a start in coaching, there is a programme of courses, to be held at Cardiff International Sports Stadium and organised by Welsh Athletics, that will suit you.
This dramatic picture of Christian Malcolm and Christophe Lemaitre crossing the line in the final of the 200m in Barcelona was kindly provided by European Athletics.
The thickness of a vest, one hundredth of a second, separated Christian from the gold medal after he had led the race up to this point.
Barcelona was hot, humid and, for six days, the centre of the athletics universe.
The large group of supporters from Cardiff was in the stadium every day and their loudest cheers were naturally for Christian Malcolm, agonisingly missing out on gold in the 200m, and Rhys Williams (pictured immediately after his race) winning silver in the 400m hurdles.
Cardiff's National Young Athletes' League team ended another successful season at the Area Finals in Birmingham on Sunday last, 1st August.
Cardiff finished a respectable sixth in a competition that was dominated by home club Birchfield Harriers.
Cardiff's UK Women's League team has returned to Division 1 after winning all three of this season's matches.
Club captain Emma Peters (pictured) led her team to victory by winning the 400m B, coming third in the 400m hurdles A and running the last leg of the 4x400m relay.
At Liverpool on Saturday last, 31 July, Cardiff clinched promotion by taking first place ahead of Enfield & Haringey, who will join Cardiff in Division 1 next year.
Cardiff's British League team could be heading to re-join the elite of British men's clubs after finishing third in the third round match at Bromley on Saturday last, 31st July.
After placing second in each of the first two rounds, and with one match remaining, Cardiff holds the second promotion spot with a healthy four point margin over third placed Kent AC.
ADVANCE NOTICE
The club's 2010 annual presentation evening and disco will be held on Sunday 12 September from 6.30 to 10.00pm.
Last year´s event was such a great success that a larger venue was needed; so this year it will be at the Earl Haigh Club in Whitchurch.
This annual event is a marvellous opportunity to celebrate the achievements of the past season both for the teams and the individuals who have performed well.
Tickets are only two pounds each and will be available in the club room.
Put this date in your diary and come along and have a great evening.
Peter Stafford was the club’s British League team manager before handing over to James Williams last year.
He also worked for Welsh Athletics as Competition Manager before landing a prestigious job with European Athletics, based in Lausanne, Switzerland.
