Welcome to Wales' Premier Athletic Club

Road takes centre stage

Friday 4 September 2009

Two important road races take place on Sunday next, 6th September.

Cardiff sees the 25th running of the Cardiff 10k while the Bristol Half Marathon takes place across the Severn Bridge.

Cardiff AAC runners will be contesting both events with Nat Lane (pictured), Richie Gardner and Simon Lawson heading for Bristol while Mike Johnson, Tom Marshall and Matt Colins will be running for Wales in Cardiff.

Richie, Nat and Simon will be going head to head with club & Welsh honours at stake, as well as a chance to make the British team for the World Half Marathon Champs in Birmingham this October. European Junior 10,000m silver medallist Simon Lawson tops the Welsh rankings this year and, on recent form, has a realistic chance of making the qualifying time of 65:30 and fighting for a place in the British team. Richie and Nathaniel will be aiming to get the better of Simon  and all three should help each on to fast times. Richie and Nat will also be using the race as a stepping stone to the Berlin Marathon two weeks later.

Cardiff's City Centre plays host to the 25th running of the Cardiff 10k. This year’s race has been well advertised and has reached its capacity of 2500, meaning there will be no entries on the day. The race starts in Sophia Gardens outside the Swalec Cricket Stadium at 10am and loops around the City Centre and parklands before finishing outside the Millenium Stadium on Westgate Street. The organisers would like to encourage spectators along to watch and support Cardiff’s premier 10k race. This year’s event incorporates an Inter-area match between Wales, the North, South & Midlands regions of England. Club members Mike Johnson, Tom Marshall and Matt Collins will be representing Wales. There is also a number of other top athlete’s making up the Elite Field, not to forget younger athletes such as Darren Jones who is running in hs second Cardiff 10k.
