Simon and David in GB team

Wednesday 1 July 2009

Simon Lawson, who took the national 5,000m title last Sunday, has been included in the first wave of UK Athletics' selections of the Great Britain team to take part in the European Junior Championships. He has been selected in the 10,000m where he is ranked third fastest in Europe this year.

David Guest (pictured), who competes for Cardiff as a Higher Competition athlete has also been selected, in the decathlon.

This opportunity represents a major step up in Simon's running career and will provide the stiffest opposition he has faced to date. European 10,000m leader Soufiane Bouchikhi from Belgium has a time of 29.58.53 to his credit, 5 seconds faster than Simon's 30.03.90.

David Guest recorded a score of 7,409 points in Stoke on 14 June to come second behind Daniel Gardner's 7,567. These fine performances placed Daniel and David first and second respectively on the UK's all time list for Juniors. Daniel's performances ranked him first in Europe and David is currently in 5th place.

The European Championships will be held in Novi-Sad, Serbia from July 23th to 26th.date. Simon and David are joined in the team by Carmarthen's Dewi Griffiths (10,000m) and we wish them all the best possible success.
