Welsh Awards for Cardiff

Sunday 19 September 2010

Cardiff AAC picked up eight of the top awards presented at the Welsh Athletics annual dinner held last night, 18th September, at Cardiff's Angel Hotel. The club itself was Welsh Club of the Year following the great successes of its teams and three distinguished former members were inducted into the Welsh Athletics Hall of Fame. Cardiff will now be nominated to UK Athletics for their Club of the Year award. Photographs kindly provided by DE Photo from whom copies may be purchased: www.dephoto.biz.

Steve Barry won the gold medal in the 30k walk at the 1982 Commonwealth Games. Kay Morley-Brown won gold in the 100m hurdles at the 1990 Games and Venissa Head took the silver medal in the discus at the 1986 Games. All three were present to accept their honours to great acclamation.

And last, but certainly not least, Alan Garrison received the award as best Newcomer to Officiating. Alan has made a great contribution to the club over the past few years.

Perhaps we can also claim a part credit for David Guest's award as the Junior Male Athlete of the year. Although primarily a member of Bridgend AC, David competes in Cardiff's British League team under the higher competition rules.

Many Cardiff members were present including those who will be leaving next Friday to travel to the Commonwealth Games in Delhi and they and all other members of the Welsh Athletics team were introduced and wished good luck in their respective events.
