Welsh Championships - 1

Saturday 12 June 2010

On a warm and sunny day, albeit with an unpredictable wind, it was good to see so many Cardiff members challenging for medals at the Welsh Championships, held in Cardiff today, 12 June.

Amongst the many medals won by Cardiff athletes, pride of place goes to the 100m senior men, where Cardiff had 6 of the 8 finalists and took all three medals through Christian Malcolm, Liam Duff and Lloyd Reffell.

Sara Barry (pictured), coached by former triple jumper Sean Power, took gold in the triple jump and improved her own championship best performance.

In the final race of the day, the 400m, Matt Elias looked to be back to his best form and was challenging 400m hurdler Dave Greene when cramp struck and Matt was forced to pull up with about 150m to go. Matt is surely booked for a very fast time if he can solve his cramp problem.

In the under 15 championships, Matt Holmes again showed his versatility, winning the Hammer with a huge personal best and taking bronze medals in the discus and javelin. Jac Palmer, son of former Welsh hammer champion Adrian Palmer, took the silver medal in the hammer and looks set to follow in his father's footsteps.

Gold and silver medals in the under 15 girls' pole vault went to Olivia Evans and Sally Nicholas.
