Welcome to Wales' Premier Athletic Club

Welsh Championships - 2

Sunday 13 June 2010

The second day of the 2010 Welsh Championships was thankfully dry but with a gusting wind.

Cardiff athletes added to the club's medal haul which included another clean sweep, this time in the men's 800m with Gareth Warburton, Joe Thomas and Gareth Wiltshire taking gold, silver and bronze.

Rhys Williams' 49.89 in the 400m Hurdles, leading from the gun and into a strong wind on the home straight, was very impressive, as was Amanda Moss's equally dominating win in the women's 800m.

A SELECTION OF PHOTOGRAPHS (by IAN DIXON) OF CARDIFF ATHLETES IS NOW AVAILABLE IN THE GALLERIES SECTION.

Gareth Warburton, Rhys Williams and Amanda Moss all looked quality athletes and should figure in the final selections for Wales' Commonwealth Games team. Rhys has clearly benefited from his technical hurdling coaching by Malcolm Arnold (coach to Colin Jackson) and the head to head with Dave Greene is a race to look forward to. Wales is lucky to have two 400m hurdlers who are currently ranked first and second, not only in Britain but in Europe.

It was particularly good to see Amanda Moss runnning so well after several years of frustration and injury.

Elsewhere, Lloyd Reffell and Rhys Knapman took silver and bronze in the men's 200m, Christian Malcolm having withdrawn from the final after comfortably winning his semi final.

Medals were in short supply in the Under 13 championships but congratulations go to Lucy Maton who won the high jump and Harry Hillman who took silver in the 100m. Harry's was an excellent performance as he is bottom of this age group and he will be able
to compete in this age group again next year.
