Young Athletes win again

Sunday 17 May 2009

Despite miserable conditions for most of the day - wind, rain and cold with occasional sunshine and officials having to wear gear more suited to cross country (but what's new?) - Cardiff's Young Athletes' League team scored another convincing win in their second round match in Cardiff today, 17th May. With only three teams taking part this time, Cardiff amassed 503 points to win from second placed Bridgend AC with Yeovil Wells & Taunton AC third.

The lengthy list of event winners speaks for itself and we are extremely proud of our athletes’ achievements, particularly given that many of the U17 athletes had a GCSE Maths exam to face on Monday 18 May, the day after the competition.  Their determination and commitment knows no bounds and is appreciated and applauded by the club.  In addition, one U13 athlete, Ciaran Lewis, was rushed to hospital on Wednesday this week with suspected appendicitis, but after a remarkable recovery, competed in the U13B 1500m.

Athletes of the match are Sam Cogan who secured a G1 level in her U17 W 300m in a time of 41.2 and Matt Holmes U15B who was competing for the very first time for Cardiff and won all his events, Hammer, Shot and Javelin.

After their first round win two weeks ago in Plymouth, Cardiff is well placed to achieve its target of an immediate return to the Midland Premier Division. But this is not yet a foregone conclusion and it will be essential to put out strong teams in all the remaining three rounds so not to slip backwards. With confidence riding high, we are sure that all team members will want to support each other and to proudly wear the Cardiff vest.

Full details of Cardiff's winners as well as the match result can be found on the event page.
