The legend of Guto Nyth Bran will be commemorated once again on New Years Eve when the streets of Mountain Ash will host the annual Nos Galan races. It is not too late to enter; but you have to do so on line.
The 2008 race (the 50th) was a special occasion for a Cardiff AAC family.
We hope that all Cardiff AAC members and friends will have a great Christmas.
The stadium is closed from Wednesday 23rd December and will reopen on Sunday 3rd January
The club will reopen next year on Monday 4th January.
The Welsh inter regional cross country championships were held at the Royal Welsh Showground, Builth Wells last Sunday, 13th December.
On a rare sunny and dry day many of Cardiff's cross country runners were in action in the South Wales team, which secured the overall title. This was a really tough challenge for the younger runners but they did not disappoint.
Jamaul White (pictured) helped Welsh schools to what is thought to be its first ever win in the Schools International Pentathlon held at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow, last Saturday 5th December.
Jamaul placed third in the under 18 boys overall competition and along with team mates Paul Bennett, Rhys Williams and Glen Elsdon amassed 9929 points for a convincing team win over England.
Cardiff member Tom Bevan was in the under 16 boys Welsh team team and scored 2744 points.
The third round of this year's Gwent League took place last Sunday, 6th December, at Hestercombe Gardens, Taunton.
Cardiff was well represented by its younger runners but was very thin on the ground in the senior categories.
Under 15 boys league leader Mike Ward, despite the handicap of using short spikes on a muddy course, came third and retained his overall lead.
The best senior performance came from Bethan Strange who finished in 10th place. This also put her 5th in the under 23 category.
Cardiff is well represented in the UK rankings for 2009, with Rhys Williams and Joe Thomas taking pride of place. Rhys was ranked second in the 400m hurdles and Joe third in the 800m.
Simon Lawson completed a fine season to be ranked first in both 10,000m and half marathon and second in the 5,000m in the under 20 age group.
The club's most succesful event was the pole vault where no less than 8 Cardiff athletes appeared in the rankings. Best placed was Lewis Newton (pictured in action) who placed 4th in the under 17 age group.
Cardiff's athletes are producing their best cross country results for many years and can look forward optimistically to the third round of the Gwent League, to be held in Taunton on Sunday next 6th December.
Cardiff teams are leading in the under 13 boys, under 15 boys, under 17 women and junior women categories.
Individually, under 15 boy Mike Ward is the star performer, having won both his opening races, at Bridgend and Bath, while Ava Hutchinson, who competes in the European Cross Country Championships in Dublin on 13th December, was first senior woman home in the last race, at Bath.
Athletics Weekly icluded in last week's edition a two page interview with Simon Lawson who described his training schedules and general philosophy towards his sport.
Combining time consuming training with his university studies as a medical student is extremely demanding but Simon has a system and his successes this year speak for themselves.

Cardiff member and Irish international Ava Hutchinson has been selected to represent her native country in the European Cross Country Championships which will be held in Dublin on 13th December.
Competing for her Irish club Dundrum South Dublin AC, Ava (pictured during the race) was sixth in the Irish Inter County championships last weekend at the Kilbeggan Racecourse, near Dublin.
The club's Annual General Meeting was held last night, 19th November.
Peter Lane (pictured) will take over from John Penny as chairman and Jeff Kirby is the new President, Paul Darney having stepped down after two years.
Coaches Helen James and Roger Grindle were elected Life Members for their outstanding service over many years and Tony Balmont was elected an Honorary Member for his support and assistance as an official.
Georgina Williams is the new coaching coordinator.
