Cardiff men promoted

Saturday 22 August 2009

Cardiff AAC are the champions of the British Athletics League Division Two, but only just after a dramatic conclusion to the season at Kingston. Inspired by Christian Malcolm, who was named BAL man of the match, Cardiff were crowned champions on points difference, winning the title by 36.5 points from Blackheath & Bromley who were promoted alongside them.

Cardiff won this final match by a massive 50.50 points with Malcolm landing victories in the 100m in 10.59 and 200m in 21.01 and the points he earned for the latter of those runs made him the star of the show.

But he was backed up by victories from his teammates that included a double from Gareth Warburton, 48.70 in the 400mB, and 1:55.91 in the 800mB, the 800mA having been won by Joe Thomas. Club captain James Thie and Chris Discombe won the 1500m A and B respectively; Gareth Wiltshire and Luke Morgan the 400m hurdles A and B; and Matt Ledger and Lewis Long the high jump A and B. Decathlete David Guest and ever reliable Matt Ledger each contested five events; David won both the discus A and pole vault A and also ran in the 4 x 100m.

After winning the opening match of the series in Cardiff, James Williams' team slipped to fifth at Bromley but recovered to take third place in Leeds a couple of weeks ago. This left Cardiff in second place going into the crucial fourth and deciding round on Saturday last, 22 August.

And they did it in style. Well done to all.

This team certainly has the ability to more than hold its own in the higher division next year; something to look forward to.
