More awards for Cardiff
Wednesday 3 November 2010
Cardiff members received five of the top awards announced at last Saturday's Annual General Meeting of Welsh Athletics.
Former club President Clive Williams receives the Award of Honour for his many years of work for the sport in Wales whilst Helen James, Tom Meyer, Christian Malcolm and Matt Elias receive Meritorious Awards for their contributions.
Clive Williams was one of the founder members of Cardiff AAC when it was created out of the merger of Roath and Birchgrove Harriers in 1969. He was the first club captain, has been a staunch supporter of the club ever since and was President for the three years 2004 to 2007.
Despite having lived in Winchester for many years, Clive's work for Welsh Athletics has been prodigious and, as one of the sport in Wales' leading statisticians and historians, he co-authored the definitive history of the athletics in Wales that was published a few years ago. For the past three years he has been a director on the board of Welsh Athletics and is currently conducting a fundamental review of the needs of the sport in Wales in conjunction with fellow director Carol Anthony and Peter Morris.
Helen James (who was herself a Welsh international sprinter) and Tom Meyer are well known and popular sprints coaches giving countless hours to help their talented groups of athletes. These, and many others, are the (usually) unsung heroes of athletics.

Tom Meyer

Helen James
Christian Malcolm and Matt Elias are international athletes whose records are well known and we are proud that they have worn the Cardiff vest. Matt decided to retire this year and is now working as a development officer for Welsh Athletics but Christian has shown, with his medals from Barcelona and Delhi, that he still has a few years of high level performances to go.

Christian Malcolm

Matt Elias
Congratulations to all.
