New Welsh Head Coach

Saturday 29 August 2009

Welsh Athletics has appointed American John Dagata as Head of Coaching for Wales. Mr Dagata leaves his post as coach to Iowa State University and will take up his new position in September. He will be responsible for developing coaching in Wales at all levels, from grassroots to elite. John Dagata is qualified in throws, jumps and sprints and specialises in speed and power.

Matt Newman, chief executive of Welsh Athletics says that “John is a top class appointment and his presence will result in huge benefits to our organisation and more importantly to the sport of athletics. John not only brings a wealth of experience and undisputed technical knowledge to Welsh Athletics, but he also possesses the human skills needed to establish the networks and personal relations that will help the Welsh coaching scene thrive at all levels, from grassroots to elite.”

This appointment coincides with Scottish Athletics appointing a Canadian to a similar position in Scotland and follows UK Athletics' appointment of Dutchman Charles Van Commenee as head coach together with Canadians Kevin Tyler as strategic head of coaching and development and Peter Eriksson as paralympic head coach. Are we seeing a takeover of UK coaching and one wonders what home grown coaches think of these developments?

Nevertheless John Dagata will surely receive the traditional Welsh hospitality and we wish him well.
